Economics of culture and digital entertainment
The seminars in USOS: Master’s / BA’s .
The seminars are currently lead by Aleksandra Wiśniewska and Wojciech Hardy – researchers with established track record of studies related to culture and creative sectors.
For years, entertainment and cultural sectors have been growing, while providing employment opportunities for increasing numbers of creators. These processes have been additionally fuelled by the decreasing costs of entry into creative sectors and new forms of creation.
The seminars cover topics from both traditional cultural economics and economics of digital entertainment. We cover the importance of culture, demand analysis for difficult-to-evaluate cultural goods and heritage, as well as the more modern digital manifestation of culture and content, including the surrounding issues. Students will be able to take up topics of cultural value, role of culture subsidies and government funding, artist labour markets, digital markets, platforms, new types of online funding, distribution, algorithms, platforms, online piracy and more.
The seminars encourage active participation and learning. We kick off with own lectures and then move on to students presenting about their interests and relevant research articles. We also cover more general topics aimed at helping with thesis writing, including: very basic econometrics, results interpretation, scientific writing, mock theses defences. Finally, once a month, we do an open reading group meeting where we talk about specific studies. See the “Roadmap” for a more detailed timeline.
Still not sure if interested? You can also check the examples of theses written by our prior students.
The seminars are conducted in Polish if only Polish-speaking students enrol (and English otherwise).
